How to Detox to Support Fertility

Why Might I Need to Detox for Fertility?

One of the main issues today is our detoxification systems are getting over-congested with increasing amounts of environmental toxins found in our tap water, pesticides (used on our food), plastics, body lotions, makeup and skincare products, pollution, and medications. It can also get overloaded with eating too much refined sugar, caffeine, refined carbohydrate, trans fats and alcohol can also lead to over-congestion of the liver. Fortunately, our bodies are well equipped to eliminate toxins they are exposed to, however, they have to work hard to dispose of them and when the liver gets too congested, it struggles to get rid of the excess oestrogen, which means excess oestrogen keeps recirculating around the body causing further harm. 

Can I Detox in a Gentle Way?

The word detox can have many negative connotations as it can be perceived as a fad or ‘diety’ and can be bloody hard depending on how extreme you go!

However, as a naturopath and having a solid background in Chinese medicine, I have learnt how powerful the process of detoxing can be for health and fertility. Does this mean you need to do a fasting juice cleanse for 21 days? Absolutely not!

Personally, with a history of an eating disorder, anything too extreme or restrictive is just not an option to me and I am realising it can be too extreme for most women. However, I have experienced that you can detox in a much gentler, intuitive and supportive way for your body. And you can have the extra benefits of more energy, clarity and better health (and therefore fertility). But it still is going to mean you get out of your comfort zone because like anything, some discomfort needs to be experienced in order to up-level and change.

I am not saying that everyone needs to do a detox if they are trying to conceive. However, if you find you are struggling to get pregnant and know that you could support your health in a better way, then it is definitely something to consider. 

How Can I Detox?

The foods and liquids we choose to put in our body play an essential role in detoxification because they can either support and strengthen our natural detoxification process or contribute to the burden. To help strengthen it, you need to start by reducing refined sugars, fried foods, trans fats, processed foods, coffee and alcohol in your diet. And then focus on adding in more vegetables, low sugar fruits (e.g. berries, apples, pears etc.), soups, smoothies, raw cold-press juices, which are high in antioxidants and support the liver in detoxification. You also need to ensure you are drinking enough water (~8 glasses per day) and moving the body regularly in a way that feels good. 

Next you need to look at reducing the toxins in your skincare products. Parabens is a toxin found in most skincare, cosmetic, and beauty products. Most common ones include sun cream, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, face cleaner, toothpaste and moisturisers. The Environmental Working Group have created a database (Skin Deep Cosmetics Database) where you can check the ingredients of many of your own products. They also have an up-to-date list of the top 12 contaminated foods (the 'Dirty Dozen'), a great indication of which foods to prioritise buying organic. 

Furthermore, ensure you are getting good quality sleep and using tools to destress such as meditation, journaling, and yoga. Some side effects of detox include headaches, irritability, tiredness, aching muscles, change of bowel movements and feeling cold. So it is extra important to look after yourself well. After a few days you may start to experience a lot more energy and vitality but to get you through the first few days, ensure you have a good support system around you cheering you on!
